Flooring/Insulation for pole barn
      01/23/05 07:15 AM

Hello~ We were wondering the best type of insulation for a pole barn. Or should we insulate it at all? What about condensation? Also what would be the best type of flooring? We would eventually like to have a variety of animals. At this point concrete is out of the budget. Our building is 36x60 and there are no stalls in place at this time. Thank you.

ppb. U'll get alot of opinions on this one, I'm sure! It's all personal preferance on insulation! Now what are U gonna use it for is main question! If stalls are installed, U'll have to pretty much protect the insulation from animals being stalled! Now if a living quarters is in future or present plans insulate where LQ is gonna be! Flooring issues: If U can't put concrete, just remember keep it HI & dry! Don't want to create a mud hole under roof! Hope this has helped!

Certainly no expert here, but we put up a 2 story bat&board barn and was told at the time not to make it too air tight...animals need the ventilation and making it too air tight would cause them to become sick more often.....we've had no problems in 10+ years. It does get fairly cold here in the winter so we will blanket the horses when below zero..we have a dirt floor with plenty of bedding(mostly sawdust/chips), I would imagine a concrete stall would be easier to clean but I know that I don't like standing on concrete for extended periods so we figured neither do the horses.

You left out a few details that would allow folks to give better advice and comments. Where is the bld? Insulation recommendations for Minot, North Dakota might be different for Galveston, Texas.

Do you intend to heat the building? What will the building house? Chicken coops would put less emphasis on drainage than say quartering a half dozen draught horses. Just guessing but I suppose your concern for condensation indicates you intend to close it all in.

Here is a couple more questions for you to answer: 1. How high is up? and 2. how long is a roll of string?

You shouldn't have to insulate if you're going to keep some animals in the barn. Most animals will do fine without heat if you keep them out of the wind, keep their living area clean, and bedding nice.

If you plan to use part of the barn as a shop or for some other use, you may want to insulate that part of the barn. Another option if you'll only be out there for a few hours at a time is to get a big Reddy Heater and just run it while you're out there. It'll be a little stinky, especially if you run it on diesel, but will get the area warm enough so that you can get some work done.

Up can be a long ways and a roll of string can be pretty short .

Thanks for all the input. I'm new at this so you'll have to bear with me.
The barn is 10' high. We live in PA.
At this point, we want to use the barn to house a variety of "pets." The first animal to be put in the barn in going to be a 4H project (holstein calf). Then other animals to follow; such as ,but not limited to-goats, sheep, miniture doney, and a horse in the distant future.
I hope this is of help.
As for the ball of string-your on your own.

Knowing the animals you mention, I have to agree with Andy...not sure heating their living area is a good idea...even with the cold snaps we experience in PA(like tonite...-8 predicted...bbbrrr!) we just blanket our horses and keep them in the barn with all doors closed....off with the blankets in the morning and out into the sun to warm up and get some exercise.

Based on your area I would not heat. If the roof is steel, I would insulate it to keep condensation to a minimum. Just make sure that the interior walls, if used for containment, dont allow the critters to use them for a light mid day snack. At a minimum I would cover the walls with ply wood.

You might be well served to see what good ranchers in your area use and recomend.

We live in Connecticut which is probably about the same climate as PA. Or stable is a steel sided pole barn, unheated. We lightly insulated the roof with R4 insulation to prevent condensation. That was obviously enough because we've had no problem. I agree that you should not heat the barn, but just use a ready heater to take the edge off when it gets real cold. This will help keep your barn floor from freezing and allowing the cold to really set into your barn. But it is still mostly for your comfort. Using kerosene in these heaters results in very little fumes or odor. We have a 155,000 BTU Reddy heater and it will raise the temperature in our barn (34x48x10) at a rate of about a degree per minute. Plugging it in for 15 or 20 minutes makes all the difference in the world
