Mounting a Weathervane

The wife recently acquired a weathervane that she wants mounted on the garage. It's got all the gear to do so, but we've got 40yr "architechtural" shingles on the roof and I'm worried about (1) damaging them with the screws that'll hold this thing on and (2) creating a path for water to get into the garage.
Does anybody have any experience with this?

Hello fjpaepke, and welcome to CBN. I don't have experience specifically with weather vanes, but know you don't ever want to put holes in your roof. If the CFO insists, put some roofing mastic down under the mounting bracket(s) then coat the top of the brackets and cover the screws with more mastic. If you have any extra shingles, and can scrape off some of the gravel, sprinkle it on the top mastic when it is still wet. This will help blend in the mastic.
A better method would be a bracket attached to the fascia so you avoid the holes in the roof.
Also, is this weather vane going to become a lightning rod?

Thanks for the reply, JazzDad. You've given me some things to consider, especially the lightning rod issue. I'll have to explore my options.

Welcome to Country by Net!
You could build a cupola and mount that on the roof with the weathervane on top! I've seen some really nice ones made from copper that would probably look nice.
A mount on the fascia board is a good idea.

Gary,
You read my mind. I, too, was thinking that a cupola is the way to go. Now to convince the wife that it'll be worth the wait!
