Any Good Sources for (Free?) Barn Plans
      03/21/03 03:17 PM

I have been recently informed that I will have to construct a barn this summer. It seems that our rabbits, and soon chickens, need a place to sleep and my wife has decided that this means we need a barn.

This is non negotiable. I suspect the barn is simply a segue to a horse, but then again, it would be presumptuous of me to assume I have any say in such matters.

So, I am on the hunt for barn plans. I've looked at a few websites with cheap plans, but they don't look that good. I've heard tell of free plans available from government websites, but not found any.

Suggestions are welcome ...

Here's one: Iowa State . There are others, usually downloadable in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format. You need Acrobat Reader to see them, it's a free download as well.

Maybe you could call up these guys and ask them to mail you a set. I bought my pole barn from them. Plans were of the shelf standard pole barn plans (4 page pamphlet, 3.95 or something like that). Everything you need to know, except about insulation. Just make sure your trusses are rated properly for your area.

If you have a lumber yard that sell pole building packages in your area they will probably have similar plans. Better to have a local place that can help with questions.

Try this site for some plans, http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/abeng/plans/index.htm. This site has a lot of older USDA and Midwest Plans service plans. They are all Adobe Acrobat files. Many of the plans don't have sufficient detail to be considered working drawings, but they'll get you started.

You may also want to take a look at this Ontario site, http://www.gov.on.ca/OMAFRA/english/engineer/facts/90-234.htm, to learn about construction requirements.

Thanks, the Ontario site is particularly useful because I'm in Ontario, and the Canada Plans plans should be suited to local requirements. I'm now going to post a question about barn floors, but I'll make a new post.

Here is the Canada Plans site : http://www.cps.gov.on.ca/english/planmenu.htm

Sorry about that. I just looked at it and see that there is a period at the end which shouldn't be there. Thanks for reposting with a link that works.
