Anybody have a good idea for building a hitching post. I was going to use 6" round posts from Tractor supply, but I couldn't remember a good way to secure the horizontal post across the two vertical posts.
Thanks,
Joe

Round out the top of the two vertical posts, lay on the horizonal post and use 1x1/4 metal strapping with lag bolts or a through bolt to hold it all together. Lots of other ways too.
Blind mortice and tenon.

I agree with Egon. You have to make sure that they can't pull that top rail off. I also use 12" spikes to drive down through them if I use 6x6's. I put the 6x6's in the ground 4' and then lay the horiz. 6x6 on top of that and put a couple 12" spikes through them. Then I anchor the back with a 2x6.

Now that I have read the ideas, I think the 6x6's would be easier than the round posts... Just thinking about the 6x6's makes my back feel sore!

Yea I'd go with 6x6's. They may be heavier but it's alot easier to do with them. You don't have to worry about carving out the top or your posts either. I've had 1500 lb. horses try and break free from mine and they haven't succeeded.
