    Default Bananas

Can you grow bananas in the US? I live in the south and I was just wondering since my family appear to be banana addicts. I know I had a neighbor growing up that had either a plaintain or a banana tree but I can't remember if they ever got anything off of it.

They grow all over south Florida and south Texas. The bananas never get real big and they make one heck of a mess.

It's been about 38 years ago, but I was surprised to see a banana tree loaded with bananas at the Texas Instruments headquarters in Dallas. That may be the only one I've ever seen. But my wife is a banana addict. Fortunately, bananas are relatively cheap.

If you are not sure that it will grow, mature and bear fruits, better not risk it. It would be better to buy as they are readily available and as Bird said, relatively cheap.

Yes, it's abundantly available and cheap as well. You can just buy it. Though, I think there is nothing wrong to try to grow some banana trees (two or three) and see what will happen to them.

I think having my own banana tree would be cool! Meghan, you go for it and let me know how it turns out!! If they grow in Dallas I could probably grow them where I live since I am a few hours south of there. Interesting.

I failed to mention that the ones I saw in Dallas was enclosed in glass like a hothouse.

    Default I have several

If you could grow banas where you live remember that they only produce once a year and the bananas are small, tasty, but small, about a 1/3 the size of a small comercially produced banana. Banana trees need to be cut to the ground every winter, require a lot of water, and are not going to produce fruit every year.
It's like growing Pineapples, this far north, everything has to be perfect to get a very small amount of usable fruit.
unless you plant dozens of them and even if you do, year round bananas are going to have to be pruchased.
How about peaches? I hear they grow great in Ga.

My dad once produced a pineapple in Anchorage, AK, and got a picture of it and story in the newspaper. Of course it was indoors in the basement of their house.
